Before a shop foreman cares where you worked, he wants three answers: which processes you run, which positions you are qualified in, and which code you are certified to. A resume that answers those in the first four lines gets forwarded to the weld test. One that opens with a paragraph about being a "hard-working team player" does not.

The second filter is quality. Welding is one of the few trades where your output is inspected, X-rayed, and given a pass or fail, which means you can prove your work numerically in a way most applicants cannot. Rejection rates, first-pass X-ray results, and repair percentages belong on the page — they are the closest thing the trade has to a performance review.

How to write a welder resume

Open with your processes, positions, and certifications

Your title line should read like a qualification record: "Combination Welder — SMAW, GTAW, FCAW | AWS D1.1 (3G/4G), ASME IX 6G." Directly beneath it, put a Certifications block before your work history. Foremen and staffing coordinators scan for process abbreviations and position codes first, and applicant tracking systems used by industrial staffing agencies match those exact strings. Burying them in a skills section at the bottom of page one is the single most common reason a qualified welder gets passed over.

  • Write processes both ways on first use: GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), SMAW (stick), FCAW (flux-cored)
  • Positions use plate codes (1G, 2G, 3G, 4G) and pipe codes (2G, 5G, 6G, 6GR) — list the highest you hold

Write certifications the way the code writes them

A certification is not just a name — it is a code, a process, a position, a material, and a thickness range. "AWS certified" tells a hiring manager nothing. "AWS D1.1 Structural Steel, SMAW, 3G and 4G, 1/8 in. to unlimited thickness, current" tells him exactly which jobs he can put you on tomorrow. Use the same precision for ASME Section IX (pressure vessel and boiler work), API 1104 (pipeline), AWS D1.5 (bridge), AWS D1.2 (aluminum), and AWS D17.1 (aerospace and aviation).

Note continuity honestly. Code certifications generally require that you keep welding with that process at documented intervals, and they are tied to the employer or test facility that qualified you. Include the certifying body or test lab and the qualification date, and say plainly whether each one is current or needs a retest. If a cert has lapsed, list it as "previously qualified, retest ready" rather than implying it is active — shops verify, and an inflated certification claim ends the conversation on the spot. CWI, CWE, and AWS SENSE completion belong in the same block.

Name materials, thicknesses, joint types, and blueprint skills

Welding carbon steel plate and welding thin-wall 316 stainless tube are different trades with the same job title. Spell out the base metals you run — carbon steel, stainless (304, 316), aluminum (5052, 6061), chrome-moly, Inconel — with the thickness or gauge range and the joint configurations you are used to: butt, lap, tee, fillet, open root with backing or without, and out-of-position overhead work.

Then prove you can work from paper. Blueprint reading, weld symbol interpretation, welding procedure specifications (WPS), and fit-up and layout are separate screened skills from welding itself, and a welder who can lay out and tack his own work is worth more to a fab shop than one who only burns rod on parts someone else set up. Say so, and name the measuring and cutting tools you use — squares, levels, band saw, ironworker, plasma, oxy-fuel torch, track burner.

Prove weld quality with NDT results and test history

This is the section most welders skip and it is the one that separates resumes. Your welds are inspected — visual (VT), dye penetrant (PT), magnetic particle (MT), ultrasonic (UT), and radiographic (RT/X-ray) — and those inspections produce numbers you are allowed to quote. First-pass X-ray rate, weld repair or rejection percentage, and bend-test results are concrete, verifiable evidence of skill.

Also list the weld tests you have taken and passed, and where. "Passed 6G open-root uphill test on 6 in. schedule 80 carbon pipe" is a sentence that gets you a callback, because the hiring foreman knows precisely what it took to produce it. If your shop tracked scrap, rework hours, or dimensional tolerances, use those numbers too.

  • Strong: "Maintained a 98% first-pass X-ray rate across 14 months of pressure-vessel seam welding"
  • Strong: "Passed 6G open-root SMAW/GTAW combination test, 6 in. schedule 80, first attempt"
  • Weak: "Produced high-quality welds according to specifications"

Tailor the resume to the industry you are applying to

Structural and ironwork employers want D1.1, FCAW production speed, beam and column connections, and comfort working at height with fall protection. Pipeline contractors want API 1104, 5G and 6G, stringer and hot-pass discipline, and travel readiness. Fabrication and job shops want fit-up, layout, blueprint reading, and versatility across small runs. Aerospace and precision manufacturing want GTAW control, thin-material work, D17.1, cleanroom-style handling, and documentation discipline.

Rebuild your top third for whichever of these you are chasing. The same career reads very differently depending on which three bullets sit above the fold, and the fastest way to lose a pipeline job is to submit a resume whose first paragraph is about sheet-metal MIG production.

Close with safety, equipment, and availability — then keep the layout plain

Contractors carry the liability for every arc struck on their site, so a clean record is a hiring argument. State OSHA 10 or 30, hot work permit experience, confined space entry, fall protection, fire watch, lockout/tagout, and your incident-free stretch if you have one. Add a TWIC card if you hold one — it is required for many refinery and port jobs and it is a searched keyword.

Then answer the logistics questions before they are asked. List rig ownership explicitly — truck, machine make, leads, torch setup — and note your union affiliation and local number if you carry a book. Say whether you will travel for shutdowns and turnarounds, take per diem work, or run nights and 12-hour rotations, because turnaround crews screen on mobility first. Finish with a single-column layout, standard headings, no graphics, and a text-selectable PDF — industrial staffing platforms parse strictly and a two-column template can scramble your certification block into nonsense.

Welder resume mistakes to avoid

Saying "AWS certified" without the code, process, and position

That phrase is unverifiable and matches nothing. Write the standard (D1.1, D1.5, D17.1, ASME IX, API 1104), the process, the positions, the material, the thickness range, and whether the certification is current — that is what the foreman needs before he schedules a test.

Leaving out weld quality numbers

Your work gets inspected, which means you have data almost no other applicant has. X-ray first-pass rate, repair or rejection percentage, and passed test records are the strongest bullets on a welding resume. Omitting them wastes your best evidence.

Listing every process you have ever touched

Claiming five processes you cannot run at production speed gets exposed at the weld test. List what you can burn all day, note the rest as familiar or trained, and let the certifications carry the weight.

Skipping materials and thickness ranges

Thin-wall stainless tube and 1-1/2 in. carbon plate are different skill sets. Naming base metals, gauges, and wall thicknesses tells a shop instantly whether your hands match their work — without it, they assume the easiest case.

Ignoring safety credentials and travel availability

OSHA 10/30, TWIC, confined space, and fall protection are hard filters on refinery, plant, and turnaround work, and shutdown crews screen on travel and shift availability first. Put them on the page instead of waiting for the phone screen.

For shop positions, a short line noting you supply your own hood, leathers, and hand tools still signals readiness to start day one. Pair it with travel availability and per diem willingness, since contractors staffing shutdowns and turnarounds screen on mobility before they screen on anything else.
